Trying my hand at an attention seeking EA GD title....

Sort of weird that we don't already have a thread for this but hey.
So, your favoured formations, as your mood dictates and fashions wax and wane. Pros, cons, comparisons etc. etc. You know the drill.

Not really played enough yet, would normally work my way thru most of them and like different shapes according to how bored I am of using others.
Always liked 4231 so started with that this year. Liked it so far, good defensive set up with the packed midfield but a host of options going fwd with the team I'm using. CAMs are further from goal than I'd like but both my CDMs are H/M and overlap thru the middle. Possibly more forgiving being a bronze team, could be a risky strategy with golds. What it does mean is that the full backs aren't so important to the attack and be chosen for their ability to cover. That jammed midfield seems to help with the clumsiness a bit as you can generally find a safe pass and there's support if you lose it.
Striker can be a bit isolated, the formation does require a patient build up to work opportunities for him but pacy CAMs will give counter attacking options.

Other one I'm using is 4321 but I'm not convinced by it at all yet. Width often comes only from the full backs which can leave you badly exposed on crosses/poor CB control. Not only that, I've always relied a lot on the dribbling of the outside mids and inside fwds to create openings, the poor 1st touch and awkward movement doesn't help there.

New team will be a powerful gold 4141 so I'm interested to see how that goes.

started off with 442 this year but changed to 41212. Still a balanced formation in this year FUT. 442 (1) => 2 CDM's instead of 2 CM's is probably the most secure one this year.

Used 4231 (2) and it was very disappointing, had most success with 41212 and 442 (2) both very solid like Glad said.
Jaja WAS the silver Ibra. :(

Too many gaps, LM/RM are useless for both cutting in and staying wide, just wasn't enjoyable to play with.

Yeah agree with carlos. Cdm's were wandering around too much...leaving a big gap in the middle

Tried 4-3-2-1 at the start but like last year the LF/RF are playing too narrow, I.e too close to the ST unlike UT 11 which was perfect  :'(

So after much switching and tinkering have gone back to 3-5-2 plays well for some teams but no so much with others my Serie A team for instance it works nicely, not so with a Brazil team.

Hmmm ... Formations ...

Primarily been using 433(4) - the one with 2 CMs and the central CAM. Like this as the CAM gets forward quite a bit & having a player like Hernanes (YES USE HIM ALREADY!!) is fantastic. Honda has proved well there too, so having good shooters/dribblers - around the 6' foot mark - have proved to be successful.

As normal we start with fullbacks with M/M WRs (Chandler/Van Den Bergh - great Bundes fullbacks - albeit silver) so don't get caught up with them too far upfield. This means the "outside" CMs need to be more box-to-box - ell, one of them at least. Likes of Ramires/Lars Bender are doing really well with their H/H WRs. Although I'm not too keen having either of them in a shooting position so generally lay it off for someone else.

DDR is playing in another team and with his M/H WRs does not get that close to goal. In that specific team Sissoko (NUFC) with his H/M is doing just that. It therefore appears that WRs are indeed working exactly as planned with those two CM slots. Salihovic has the monster boot on him, but his M/M WRs and slow pace means you need to force him to get a bit more forward into shooting position. Heck ... just take the shot from 40-yds ... it's FIFA UT after all.

Striker - am liking the bigger/stronger guys - did so last year too. Huntelaar has been successful as well as IF Jo. Only played a few games with Higuain ... been decent

So ... finally the wingers. As mentioned in another post, Reus/Sam were playing great. Have sold off Reus and bought Hazard. Hazard is just amazing - been electric "almost" every game. El Shaa been decent as has HBA. Hulk has been terrific. Willian started well and has been ok. Just bought Perisic for the Bundes - slower/bigger guy - will see how that works out.

This will be my preferred 433 formation. I'm guessing custom formations WON'T stick so it will be a case of using these all the time.

I have used 3412/343 - only a handful of times. Have always liked the 3atb formations ... not sure if this UT I may be dragged away from them. Time will tell.

Tried a few of the new 433 variants and really didn't like them. The CM/CAM playmaker seems to get lost for me, and there tends to be big gaps in the centre of the park.

Also tried the new 4231 and didn't like that either, pretty much for the same reasons Carlos and Glad stated.

Went back to 4321 and really enjoying it. Maybe I'm just used to it, but it works.

Have just made a couple of cheap 4231 teams (Brazilian and Colombian/BPL). Wanted to have a look at whether the shape of the formation has changed in-game, with the two CAMs that used to be wide in more of a LF/RF position.

Only played one single match but this seems to be the case. The front quartet of

-------Pato
Jadson---Eduardo
-----Bernard

destroyed a pretty strong BPL team 8-1.

Will need a lot more games to assess it properly but looks promising so far.

Oh. For me it seemed exactly the same as the old 4231. Possibly they do make more runs infield... I think that there's more interchanging of positions this year, I'm finding my players all over the place in attack, not necessarily in a bad way but I do need to pay attention in case they end up in counter productive roles. Could be that if you expect those CAMs to pick up different positions to what they used to then you'll somehow play them in there and they'll stick around.
Or something.

Aha!  Just the thread I was looking for...

Have been playing 41212, with a modicum of success.

Building a new fitness bench for Galatasary and decided to go with Brazil, as there are so many players I want to try.

Looking at the broad spectrum of appealing options in midfield (Hernanes, Melo, Paulinho, Diego, Ronaldinho (still), Kaka (still), Fernandinho) I was looking for a formation to house them all... well, as many as possible!  ;D

Would have to forego Hulk of course in this set up.

The beauty of 14 though, is of course, no formations cards, so would pop Hulk on the bench along with a LM to give the option to swap it (how I love the dropping of formations - the only good thing EA did?).

I shall try 4231 with Canarinho and let you know what this clumsy old oaf makes of it.

But you say not attacking full backs, yes?
